Serie 6000: rolling stock from Barcelona metro

Sèrie S/6000

On April 18, 2005, the contract was formalized between the ATM, CAF and the Sociedad Arrendadora (AIE) for the rental of 10 new trains for line 1 of Barcelona’s metro (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain), which would make up the future 6000 series.

The composition is MA1-MB1-R-MB2-MA2, where MA is control car, MB motor intermediate trailer and R intermediate trailer car.

The Series is similar to the 5000 but is prepared for line 1 of Iberian gauge.

The price of the award of these 10 trains was 65 million euros. Of these, more than 12.7 million are for spare parts for the train. The rolling stock delivery schedule foresees receipt of the first train in May 2007 and the last in December of the same year.

The contract is for operational rental and is established for a period of 18 years; Once this has elapsed, the ATM can choose to extend the rental, or acquire the trains definitively at a price that would be around 50% of their initial value.

Each train is made up of two control cars and three intermediate trailers and will have a total length of 86 meters. They were built for RENFE gauge (1674 mm). They have a capacity for 1,116 passengers and a maximum speed of 80 km/h. There is intercommunication between all cars and an ATM/ATO driving system. I have a video surveillance system and automatic smoke detection system as security measures.

On June 11, 2007, the first train of this series entered service on line 1.
