Serie 6000 Madrid

The 6000 series is a series of mobile units of the Madrid metro built by CAF during 1998 and that provide service only on the TFM section of line 9 of the Madrid metro. Currently this series has trains that are made up of two drive units (M+M), and others with two drive units and a trailer (M+R+M).

The 6000 series was manufactured to provide service for both short and long routes outdoors such as line 9b (TFM).

The bogies of the 6000 cars have been designed by CAF (Spain), and built by it and by Alstom (in France).

Characteristics

This series forms trains made up of MM or MRM units, with carriages connected by an open hallway that allows the traveler to pass from one side to the other. They were the first Madrid Metro trains to include this type of corridor. All units in this series are single voltage at 600 Vdc and are manufactured for a track width of 1445 mm and a wide gauge (2,776 m wide). These cars include air conditioning in the passenger compartment, black box, ATP and ATO equipment, acoustic and visual passenger information and passenger-driver communication. The wheels are soundproofed one-piece, with a maximum diameter of 860 mm and a minimum of 790 mm.

It is the only series in Madrid with found seats.

To operate on Line B of the Buenos Aires Subway, the units sold were modified to be able to circulate on its international gauge tracks, in addition to the placement of lateral supplements to compensate the width of the units with the railway gauge of said line (3100 mm). The maximum speed has also been limited, and is 60 km/h.

Security

Each car is equipped with two emergency brakes and manual opening on each of the doors, as well as an emergency door at the opposite end of the driver’s compartment that allows passage to the next car on the train.

The emergency brakes consist of a red handle located at opposite ends of the car (front and back or next to the end doors, one on each side).

Manual opening of the doors consists of a red lever located under a metal cover above each door. It is activated by moving the lever from the vertical position to the horizontal position in a clockwise direction. After releasing the door lock, it can be opened simply by pushing with your hands.

History
The 6000 series has been running on line 9 since 1998, after the extension to Arganda del Rey. These trains initially ran with two motor units (MM), but later trailers were added, becoming MRM units.

During Rock in Rio in Madrid, trains with MRM-MRM composition circulated to support greater demand.

In July 2013, 86 units were sold (72 M and 1 R by Metro de Madrid; 13 R by Caixa Renting), of the 132 manufactured to the Buenos Aires subway for use on its line B; along with rigid catenary technology; totaling an income of approximately 32.6 million euros (only from Metro de Madrid). After this sale, their circulation has been restricted to the TFM section (Puerta de Arganda – Arganda del Rey), where they provide service in the M+M and M+R+M configuration.

By 2023, on Line B, only 5 of the 14 possible formations are in operation due to different reasons, such as inspections, repairs or waiting for spare parts. One of the formations has been stored in a warehouse since its arrival in Argentina.
