Serie Salamanca (S): vintage subway train

Serie Salamanca (Madrid)

The Salamanca type cars (type S) correspond to the first series of second generation classic cars of the Madrid Metro (Spain). They were in service from 1942 to 1990.

*Not to be confused with Salamanca city (Castilla y León) or with Salamanca district.

Mostly intended for line 4, opened in 1944, they were narrow gauge for a track width of 1,445 mm. They were the first 4-door vehicles, with capacity for 24 seated travelers.

Shortly after, to attend to the extensions of line 3 and improve the service of line 4, new train units were contracted: the Boulevard type cars. They were practically the same except for the shape of the double lantern on the roof. They were built between 1945 and 1947 and were in service until 1989 and 1990.
