Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux

Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux is a commune located in the department of Drôme (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France).

  • Saint-Jean Church (first cathedral), rebuilt in the 12th century by the Templars.
  • Old cathedral (12th century: cul-de-four vaulted central apse, semi-circular vaulted nave, decorated archivolt, sculptures, frescoes and mosaics (13th century), former high altar (17th century).

  • The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux was started in the middle of the 12th century from the choir and completed around 1220. The main apse, cul-de-four vaulted, is decorated with a good copy of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. There is a similar example in Saint-Restitut, nearby, but of a more modest size. The decor is made of five classic Provençal Romanesque arcades with fluted or twisted columns topped with capitals. The Gothic South Porch was added in the 15th century. The cathedral has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1841.
  • Former hospital commandery then fortified house with remains of the 13th century keep and 17th and 18th century dwellings.

  • Chapel of the penitents (13th and 14th centuries).

  • Remains of the 14th century synagogue.
  • Numerous private mansions (Renaissance style) and old houses.
  • Former 17th century Hôtel de Castellane: facade and courtroom (Historic monument).
  • Sainte-Juste Chapel (17th and 18th centuries) built on the foundations of a Romanesque chapel.

  • Castle rebuilt in the 18th century on the medieval bases of the bishop’s castle.
  • Marist convent and chapel (18th century).
  • Fountains.
  • Reformed Temple, Place de la Libération.
  • Oratory at Saint-Vincent.
  • At a place called Chanier: vestige of a 13th century keep near a main building from the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • Bellevue Castle (17th century).
