FATIMA
WEDNESDAY, 8th March at 21.30 at the Teatre Comunal, Andorra la Vella. (5€) Cinema de les Valls presents: Fatima (in French). Directed by Philippe Faucon. Starring: Soria Zeroual, Zita Henrot, Kenza Noah Aöche, Chawki Amari, Dalila Bencherif and Edith Saulnier. Fatima lives on her own with two daughters to support: 15-year old Souad, a teenager in revolt, and 18-year old Nesrine, who is starting medical school. Fatima speaks French poorly and is constantly frustrated in her daily interactions with her daughters. To ensure the best possible future for them, she works odd hours as a cleaning woman. One day, she takes a fall on the stairs. On sick leave, Fatima begins to write to her daughters in Arabic that which she has never been able to express in French. Based on a true story and the poetry of the North African writer, Fatima Elayoubi, who immigrated knowing very little French and slowly taught herself the language. A patient, reflective study of a woman pressured by her children and her neighbours alike to assimilate into a culture of which she’s wary. Despite the display of everyday racism, both veiled and overt; internal domestic disputes and external gestures of inhospitality, Fatima offers an uplifting experience and one of recent French cinema’s most trenchant and moving portraits of immigrant experience.

Winner of the following FRENCH CÉSAR AWARDS at the Cannes Film Festival 2015: Best Film, Most promising Actress, Best writing-adaptation.
