CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

Every Tuesday – Saturday throughout July at 22h with warmup entertainment from 21.30 in Parking Parc Central, Andorra la Vella. SCALADA: STELAR created specially for Andorra with a new story of dreams and fantasies, this time in a parallel world between earth and sky. MUSIC

JOAN MONNÉ: Thursday, 13th July from 21h – 23h at the Pergola, Park Hotel, Andorra la Vella. (Advance reservation essential at 877 779) Jazz Nights under the Pergola. Savour the hotel’s menu and wines in privileged surroundings pianists from the world of Jazz. Joan Monné studied music in Barcelona soon combining his classical studies with that of jazz. He has played with the likes of Benny Golson and James Moody and with some of Spain’s best jazz musicians. He has recorded three discs: Son Song, Mireia and Standards and the Joan Monné Nou Nonet. He has also taken part in diverse television programmes.

ANDORRA JAZZ ESCALDES-ENGORDANY Thursday, 13th – Sunday, 16th July 2017 in the Prat del Roure, Escaldes-Engordany. All at 22h – except on Sunday when it is at 19h. The concerts vary in price but a ticket for the whole series is 80€ with seats in the front section.

Chano Domínguez: Thursday: (Tickets: 35€ in the front, flat section, 30€ in the tiered section further back.) followed by Paolo Fresu & Uri Caine. The prestigious Andalusian pianist Chano Domínguez will open the festival with the rhythms of flamenco jazz. On the same night Paolo Fresu & Uri Caine will explain, with trumpet and piano, the story of the success of two great personalities of modern jazz.

Michael League: Friday (Tickets: 25€ in the front, flat section, 20€ in the tiered section further back.). Discover Bokanté, the latest project of the New York composer, bass player and leader of the Snarky Puppy, Michael League. Bokanté is an original combination of music from west Africa, Delta blues and Led Zeppelin, with the lyrics in Creole and French.

John Scofield: Saturday (Tickets: 35€ in the front, flat section, 30€ in the tiered section further back.). The well-known American guitarist and composer of jazz-rock will present Überjam, winner of the latest Grammy award for the best jazz instrumental disc.

Madeleine Peyroux Sunday: at 19h (Tickets: 20€ in the front, flat section, 15€ in the tiered section further back.) North American jazz singer, guitarist and composer.

Can’t face a concert that starts at 22h? Then why not try these? To complete the welcome of Andorra Jazz Escaldes-Engordany this classic of the parish returns once more marking the 33rd Festival Internacional Colors de Música.

Tricia Evy. Monday 10th: An interesting and surprising current voice, a consolidated talent that fuses various genres using jazz as the common denominator. Backed by Gerard Nieto: (piano); Ignasi González (double bass); Roger Gutiérrez: (drums).

Benjamin León Trio. Tuesday 11th: An encyclopaedia of jazz, he was considered the best organist in Europe and not without reason. Benjamín León: (vocals/ piano); Arnau Boix: (trumpet); Adrià Font: (drums).

Acoustic Guiri. Wednesday 12th: A musical offering that mixes an instrumental formation very typical of Jazz Manouche and a warm Blues and Soul voice. Julie Hamar: (vocals); Fanny Abela: (violin); Pierre-Arnaud Bourhis & Fran Asensio: (guitars); François Georges-Picot (double bass).

Victor de Diego Trio. Thursday13th: The Basque saxophonist presents, in his second CD, Bittor, a creative, direct and interactive music. Víctor de Diego (tenor & soprano sax); Jordi Gaspar: (double bass); Gonzalo del Val (drums)

Enma Fernández Band. Friday 14th:. Virtuosity and energy, a show that leaves no one indifferent: rhythm and blues, swing, traditional jazz. Enma Fernández: (piano and vocals); Héctor Martín: (guitar); Pol Prats: (tenor sax); Jordi Prats: (baritone sax); Dan Posen: (trompet); Josep Blanes (trombone); Álvaro Taborda: (double bass); Roberto Olori (drums).

Jazz in the Classroom, Saturday 15th:. A show that travels through the history of jazz: What is swing? What is a Scat? What is the difference between classical music and Jazz? A show where the spectators are major protagonists! Oriol Gonzàlez: (drums); Jay Wallis (trumpet & vocals); Pep Rius (double base) Xavier Algans: (piano).

CINEMA

Baby Driver Monday 10th – Thursday, 13th July at 20.15 at the Cinemes Illa Carlemany, Escaldes-Engordany. Directed by Edgar Wright. Starring Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal and Jon Hamm. The Story: A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom. Rotten Tomatoes reviewers gave this film 97%. Here’s the Rolling Stone review: “Edgar Wright’s start to finish sensation is blessed with killer car chases, a star-making turn from Ansel Elgort, the year’s best soundtrack and the most fun you’ll have at the movies all summer.”
