PICK OF THE WEEK: 20th – 24th September

MUSIC

MOZART’S THE MAGIC FLUTE. Opera direct from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. WEDNESDAY 20TH at 20.15 at the CINEMES ILLA CARLEMANY, Escaldes-Engordany. Directed by DAVID MCVICAR, conducted by JULIA JONES and starring RODERICK WILLIAMS and JANAI BRUGGER. The Story: Prince Tamino, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno, promises the Queen of the Night that he will rescue her daughter Pamina from the enchanter Sarastro. But Tamino and Papageno discover Sarastro is a wise and kind man. By the end they are united with their true loves: Tamino with Pamina, and Papageno with his Papagena. In MCVICAR’s production the audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score. A success since its opening night in 1791, today THE MAGIC FLUTE ranks second only to La Traviata in popularity.

EXHIBITIONS

ANTONI TAULÉ at the government exhibition gallery, ARTALROC, Escaldes-Engordany. Until SUNDAY, 5TH NOVEMBER. After a career spanning fifty-one years, TAULÉ is exhibiting paintings and photographs made between 1973 and 2016. One of the most relevant figures in current contemporary art TAULÉ was born in Sabadell in 1945, and now lives and works in Paris where he has paintings hung in the National Centre for Contemporary Art. TAULÉ’s works reveal an enigmatic world of his own, placed in front of wide, gloomy, architectural spaces, illuminated by intense, dazzling, theatrical light. These are timeless scenes, inhabited by isolated, solitary characters, immobilized halfway between sleep and awakening.

FESTIVALS

VILA MEDIEVAL DE SANT JULIÀ. FRIDAY 22ND – SUNDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER. For me one of the highlights of the cultural year is when Sant Julia transforms itself into a medieval town. Flocks of geese are driven by their gooseherd down the main street which is lined with tents selling all sorts of medieval wares. There are displays of medieval craftsmen: a wood-turner making delightful trinkets, a great oven used for baking all sorts of delicious breads. There are artists, and face-painting and games for the children, old fashioned fair rides and special events like falconry and jousting. Collect a brochure of the packed programme from your hotel or local Tourist Office.

Culturally yours,

Clare
