FESTIVAL OF JAMBO STREET MUSIC – ANDORRA LA VELLA

Open-air music festival, which aims to publicize the musical offerings of the country and which take place in different places in the Historic Center. DANCE

Tuesday, 12th June at 20.15 at the Cinemes Illa Carlemany, Escaldes-Engordany. Direct from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. Romeo & Juliet. Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers encounter passion and tragedy in Kenneth MacMillan’s 20th Century ballet masterpiece with music by Sergey Prokofiev, Matthew Ball as Romeo and Yasmine Naghdi as Juliet. Conducted by Pavel Sorokin and with Sergey Levitin as Concert Master.

The Story: Romeo and Juliet fall passionately in love, but their families are caught up in a deadly feud. They marry in secret, but tragic circumstances lead Romeo to fight and kill Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. As punishment, he is banished from the city. When Juliet’s parents force her to marry Paris, she takes drastic action by drinking a potion to make her appear dead so she can escape to join Romeo. But her message explaining this plan fails to reach him. When he hears news of her death, he returns to visit her tomb and kill himself. Juliet wakes to find him dead. Devastated, she stabs herself.

Background: In 1965, MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, The performance lasts about 2 hours 55 minutes, including two intervals.

EXHIBITIONS

From 14th June – 14th September at Lake Engolasters, Escaldes-Engordany. Andorra’s L’AndArt’19, 3rd Biennial International Exhibition. L’AndArt 2019, brings us works of multidisciplinary artists from all over the world. The exhibition consists of land art , video artpieces, sculptures and photographs. The theme of the exhibition, around which many of the exhibited works will be created, is the shinrin-yoku , the healthy Japanese practice of ‘forest baths’, which involves connecting with nature by submerging oneself in the forest. More than 30 international artists are waiting for you from 11 different countries including from as far afield as Iran, Argentina, Brazil and Australia.

FESTIVALS

Monday, 10th June at 12h at the Church of Sant Romà de Vila d’Encamp. The Day of Sant Romà de Vila. The Programme for this traditional day is 12h Solemn mass. The planned acts will continue with an aperitif and sardana dancing. The Comú de Encamp offers a free bus that will leave at 11:30h from the stop next to the old gondola building.

Thursday, 13th June at 18.30h at the Church of Sant Antoni de l’Aldosa, Canillo. The Festival of Saint Anthony. Mass will be followed by afternoon tea and dancing.

CINEMA

Tuesday 11th – Thursday, 13th June at 17.45 at the Cinemes Illa Carlemany, Escaldes-Engordany. L’Homme Fidéle (The Faithful Man in French with Spanish subtitles.) Directed by Louis Garrel, Starring: Louis Garrel, Laetitia Casta, Lily-Rose Depp. The Story: A couple’s relationship becomes complicated when she leaves him for his best friend, and returns after the best friend dies.

Thursday, 13th June at 20.15h at the Cinemes Illa Carlemany, Escaldes-Engordany. Nous Finirons Ensemble (Little White Lies, in French). Directed by Guillaume Canet. Starring: François Cluzet, Marion Cotillard, Gilles Lellouche. The result of the small handkerchiefs, “Petits mouchoirs”, (little white lies), 7 years later. A near-fatal accident leaves one friend in hospital while the rest go on their annual holiday. But their secrets and personal grief threatens to drive them apart.

Thursday, 13th June at 17.30h at the Communal Library, Encamp. (Free. Aimed at children aged 6 and over. Registration essential at reception at the library.) Workshop: We’ll make a necklace with shells. Led by Mercè Fernández, the children will paint shells and turn them into necklaces.

NATURE

Saturday, 15th June starting at 9.30h at La Plana, Cta de la Plana, Escaldes-Engordany. (5€ for those over 14, to be paid at the time. Compulsory inscription at: [email protected] or (+376) 742 630.) An ethnobotany outing (in Catalan).

SPORT

Friday 14th – Sunday, 16th June from 15h – 19h at Grandvalira – Sector Grau Roig, Encamp. (For more information: Area de Jovent, Encamp Sports Centre Tel +376 834 333 or [email protected] 2019 Spartan (Obstacle) Race Encamp-Andorra. For the fourth consecutive year, the parish of Encamp will host one of the 2019 tests of the Spartan Race circuit, which this year will also feature the Ultra modality, a race of more than 40 km and more than 60 obstacles, the only one to be carried out in the west of Europe.

In addition, Encamp will be converted into a Trifecta Weekend, because the Andorran race will include the three usual modalities of the race, the Sprint (5km and more than 20 obstacles), the Super (more than 13km and more than 25 obstacles ) and the Beast (21 km and more than 30 obstacles). Thus, the Spartans can choose between doing a single test or, for the most daring, doing the three in a single weekend. In addition, the Spartan Race Encamp-Andorra will also offer the possibility of signing up to the Spartan Kids, a test adapted for the little ones, and to the Hurricane Heat, a modality in which only those who have finished at least one Beast can register because in this test you do not know what the distance will be, only that it takes 12 hours. The rest of the riders can enter the 4 hour Hurricane Heat.

LA MASSANA CABLE CARS

Saturday, 15th June to Sunday, 8th September the Vallnord Mountain Park, La Massana will be open from 10.30h – 18.30h. (From Saturday, 27th July – Sunday 18th August, times will be extended to 10h – 20h. During the UCI World Cup Mountain Bike – 2nd – 7th July the Bike Park will be closed to nonm-participants.

The La Massana Telecabina will be open every day from 14th June – 8th September from 10h – 18.30h with the hours from 27th July – 18th August extended to 10h – 20h.

The Arinsal Telefèric will be open from the 29th June to 8th September from 9h – 18.39h.

STREET MARKETS

Saturday, 15th June from 10h – 14h in the Plaça dels Arínsols, Encamp. Encamp Saturday market. The Encamp Entrepreneurs Association (AEE) recommences their traditional market as a showcase for trade in the parish. This initiative, which was launched in 2014 with the collaboration of the Comú d’Encamp, has had numerous auxiliary activities such as botifarrades (sausage barbeques) children’s face painting, magic, musical performances or batucades (drum bands).
