Moscow Zoo

Moscow Zoo (State Autonomous Institution of Culture “Moscow State Zoological Park”) is a zoological park in the center of Moscow.

One of the oldest zoos (1864) in Europe and the fifth largest zoo in Russia after the zoos of Yaroslavl, Rostov-on-Don, Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk. It is one of the ten most visited zoos in the world (up to 3.8 million people a year).

There are 1267 animal species, 10531 individuals in the zoo’s collection.

It has the status of the head zoo of Russia, the headquarters of the Euro-Asian Association of Zoos and Aquariums. An active participant in international projects for the maintenance and study of species in the wild (rehabilitation and reintroduction), breeding of rare animal species in captivity.

It is located next to the Garden Ring between Krasnaya Presnya, Bolshaya Gruzinskaya and Zoologicheskaya streets. The main entrance is located at the crossroads of Krasnaya Presnya and Bolshaya Gruzinskaya, not far from the Barrikadnaya and Krasnopresnenskaya metro stations.

Until 2014, the symbol of the Moscow Zoo was a wild cat – manul. After a change in leadership, the symbol was changed to an abstract representation of pelicans, squirrels, dolphins and pigeons. In 2019, for the 155th anniversary, the zoo returned the manul as a logo.

Moscow Zoo is subordinate to the Department of Culture of the Government of Moscow.

Humboldt penguins hatched in the zoo in 2022. They are in the International Red Book in the category “Vulnerable”.

In July 2022, the Pinnipeds pavilion was completed with premises for beluga, sea lions, walruses, northern fur seals, and seals.
