The Castelldefels Castle dominates the coastal corridor towards Barcelona

The Castelldefels Castle (cat. Castell de Castelldefels) is a castle in the municipality of Castelldefels (Baix Llobregat), declared a cultural heritage of national interest in Catalonia.

It rises to a height of 60 m above sea level and above the city to which it gave its name.

The castle is located at the end of a small mountain range oriented from southwest to northeast, parallel to the coastline. This mountain range connects to the Garraf massif via Puig de l’Olla (426 m). The highest point of the massif is La Morella (593 m). The location of the castle is strategic, it dominates the coastal corridor towards Barcelona, as well as the coastline, from where there were frequent naval attacks in the Middle Ages.

During the restoration, the castle itself took on a “medieval look” due to the inclusion of three-bladed battlements,  and an angular tower. The windows have stained-glass windows. The fence is accessed from the flanks of two square towers.

The first documents that tell us about the foundation of the castle date back to the 10th century (967).

The castle is currently being restored.
