“Cardiovascular diseases: how can we prevent them?” by the cardiologist, Dr Ricard Ballester.

Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent cause of death in developed countries. There are some risk factors that make people more likely to suffer from these diseases. They are classified into non-modifiable factors, such as age, sex, family history or having previously suffered vascular disease, and modifiable factors, such as diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, obesity, sedentary lifestyle and stress.

Knowledge of these factors and their control are essential to improve the personal health of our society, since the objective of medicine must be focused primarily on prevention and on early diagnosis. According to the World Health Organization, the mortality rate due to cardiovascular diseases can be reduced by almost 80% if a healthy lifestyle is followed and these risk factors are controlled (limited seating.)
