Andorra (Pyrenees) endorsed adherence to the WHO framework convention on tobacco control (WHO FCTC). This decision has been made today by the Government of Andorra.
The accession of Andorra to this convention fully meets the obligations in the negotiations on an association agreement with the European Union between the Government of Andorra and the European Commission.
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was adopted in Geneva on 23 May 2003 and entered into force on 27 February 2005. At present, 181 countries joined the convention, the last of which was Mozambique (accession took place in July last year).
The Convention confirms the right of all people to a healthy lifestyle. Its purpose is to consider the causes of smoking, including a number of complex factors, such as advertising, sponsorship, and illicit trade in tobacco products. The Convention has the right to determine specific obligations through financial, legislative, executive or administrative measures that include a ban on advertising, promotion or sponsorship of tobacco of any type.
The Convention must be ratified by the parliament and the co-princes of Andorra. After approval, the Convention will enter into force three months after the deposit of the instrument of accession with the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
