On Saturday Andorra Telecom, Andorra (Pyrenees), initiated the process of blackout of ADSL analogue network connection after 10 years of its functioning. Now all the country connects to the Internet via optic fibers. Thus, the Principality became the first country in the world that switched all copper cable ADSL networks all around the country. Previously in 2012 Andorra became the first country in the world to cover 100% of its territory with optic fiber network.
The representatives of Andorra Telecom reported, Seven years ago, when we started this project, we were sure that we are moving in the right direction, but today we see the evident results of the success of the idea. “We would like to be the pioneers of this sphere in order to assure the competitive advantage of Andorra on this market as well”, they added. It was also mentioned, that the existing optic fiber line is being actively modernized. The major challenge of the company is to attain the level of 1Gb in every house by 2020.
This way of development is common for all neighboring countries’ operators (Spain and France). Previously EU issued a special resolution, where the necessity to refuse from ADSL system and to transfer it to optic fiber format by 2020 was mentioned. Currently optic fiber covers about 50% of European territory in average.
In accordance to Net Index results as of 2014 Andorra took the 11th position in the rating of the countries with the highest download and upload internet speeds.
