Casa de la Vall – former Parliament building

Andorra la Vella, Andorra

The Casa de la Vall is a centenary building located in Andorra la VellaAndorra, used as the seat of parliament, the Consell General of Andorra, since the constitution of the Andorran parliament and the seat of the former Consell de la Terra.

Since 2011, it is the seat of Consell General only in traditional sessions (constitutive and session of Saint Thomas).

The rest of the sessions are held in the new parliament building. It is a monument declared an asset of cultural interest. It was built in 1580, as a manor house and defense tower of the Busquets family. In 1702 it was bought by the then Consell de la Terra, under the mandate of the General Syndic Joan Antoni Torres. As of 1866, the Consell de la Terra became Consell General, until present day.

Over the front door there are the coat of arms of the Busquets family (a tree) and the coat of arms of Andorra. The building is rectangular and has three floors. Worth highlighting is its corner tower.

In the garden in front of the building there is the commemorative sculpture of the first centenary of the New Reform that represents the traditional dance of the morisca, work of Josep Viladomat (1967).

The ground floor is destined for the administration of justice with a Courtroom. On the first floor there are the noble floor of the family house, the main session room, a chapel dedicated to Saint Ermengol and the Seven Keys Cupboard, where the historical documents of Andorra are kept closed with one key for each of the parishes.

On this floor there is also the old kitchen, which can be accessed from the famous Sala dels Passos Perduts (Hall of Lost Steps) where the protocol acts are held.

On the second floor also called in catalan Cap the casa (head of the house), there is a multipurpose room, used for example to house exhibitions. During the year 2015 Casa de la Vall was one of the most visited places in And, along with the Tobacco Museum and the Escaldes-Engordany Art Center.
